Review: Crazy Chicken: Director's Cut (3DS)

Crazy Chicken Game ReviewReview by Chris I.

The Crazy Chicken franchise has been a runaway success for developer Teyon on mobile platforms and understandably so: its simple pick-up and play nature is perfectly fitting for gaming on the go. Yet, this whimsical series has flapped its way onto Nintendo’s 3DS eShop and DSiWare services before and its set its scenes back in action once again with Crazy Chicken: Director’s Cut 3D.

Review: Ohno Odyssey (3DS)

Review by Chris I.

One of the joys of writing game reviews is that sometimes it’s the least expected games that surprises you. When Big John Games’ Ohno Odyssey came across my desk, the thought that came to mind was: “Oh no!” Yet, this charming little alien filled physics-based puzzle game proved my initial reactions wrong and put a smile on my face each and every time one of the little aliens cried “Oh no!”, as they approached their inevitable demise.

Review: Skydive: Proximity Flight (PS3)

Review by Chris I.

Do you remember that your PlayStation 3 controller features Sixaxis motion controls? I thought about as much; thoughts of Lair still send shivers down my spine to this very day and I'm glad that most developers ignored the Sixaxis controls thereafter.

Review: Arcade Classics 3D (3DS)

Written by Michael B.

Game collection titles are an interesting oddity. From an uninformed viewpoint they seem like the best of both worlds, as developers are given the freedom to mess around with several dozen different mechanics and players are given more variety for their money. Unfortunately, most game collections are poorly made, and these games are typically best ignored by informed players unless they are truly bored. It is sad because there is good potential in game collections for experimentation.

Review: Gravi (PC)

Review by Michael B.

Before I go onto the review proper, I want to point out two things. Firstly, I was never able to get Gravi to run in Steam’s Offline Mode. This was tested on both a laptop and a dedicated gaming desktop. I have contacted the developer Hashbang Games about this issue and it seems that this is an unintentional bug, but as of writing this review it has still not been addressed.

Secondly, almost none of the promised features listed in the Steam Early Access developer comment were present in my review copy of the game. I have no idea how updating info on Early Access titles works from a developers perspective, so I am not immediately going to call Hashbang Games out on this. However, I feel obligated to state that the Early Access developer comments are not reflective of the final product. Moving on…

Review: Pocket God: Ooga Jump (iPhone)

Jumping right out of its sandbox, Ooga Jump takes the Pocket God franchise to new heights; literally. Developer Bolt Creative has taken advantage of what the mobile phones are best at doing to give players a new way to experience its popular franchise. While you've seen everything this game offers elsewhere before, there’s a lot of enjoyment to be found all the same.

Review: Batman: Arkham Origins (iPhone)

Review by Chris I.

With the console release of Batman: Arkham Origins just behind us, I stumbled across the iOS version of the title, noticed that it was a free download and decided to give it a go. Without any knowledge of the game prior to the download, I went into the title, well, blind as a bat to what I'd be doing. Once the darkness lifted, I’ve found that I’m enjoying myself quite a bit with this mobile title.

Review: Armed Seven (PC)

Review by V8Ninja.

Is Armed Sevena SNES game that forgot to be released? Because if not, it sure does one masterful job convincing me otherwise. Everything, from the art design to the music to the simplistic controls, gives off the vibe of a game released when Mario was the bees knees and Sonic the Hedgehog was the coolest and/or fastest thing alive. Unfortunately, this entails both positives and negatives.

Review: Snow Moto Racing 3D (3DS)

Review by V8Ninja

Racing video games tend to sway in one of two directions; either hyper-realism or pure arcade action. The first category contains games like Gran Turismo, Need for Speed: Shift, and the majority of Codemasters titles. The other category contains the Burnout, Mario Kart, and F-Zerogame franchises along with various one-off games. There rarely happens to come along a game that achieves a middle-ground; the only one I can think off immediately is Trackmania.

Review: Drift Mania: Street Outlaws (iPhone)

Review by Chris I.

The drift scene can be a thing of beauty: powerful import tuners and muscle cars using their immense power to lock into high speed drifts, leaving waves of smoke and burnt rubber in their wake. The Drift Mania series has attempted to bring this high speed action to mobile devices and gained a substantial following in the process. Now that Real Racing 3, 2K Drive and Colin McRae Rally are on the scene, is Drift Mania: Street Outlaws still in contention or is it in a league of its own?

Review: NBA 2K14 (PS3)

Review by Sam M.

Basketball is completely foreign to me. I know that there are five players on two teams, and both teams try to get as many points by shooting a ball into the basket as they can. That’s where my knowledge ends. That's where most Australians' knowledge ends.

Even though I don’t know much about basketball, you can tell that a lot of effort has been put into NBA 2K14. Just spending time watching the demo play on the title screen, you can tell how much work has been put into the game's AI. The way each player moves, attacks and defends all make it look like you’re watching an actual basketball game. Actually, compared to the Australian basketball championship, what you see in this game looks far more realistic than the real thing.

Review: Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox 360)

Review by Rexly P.

The last time players explored San Andreas was in 2004 with the release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Nine years later, we return to a redefined San Andreas consisting of the urban sprawl of Los Santos and the vast landscapes of Blaine County in Rockstar Games' latest release, Grand Theft Auto V.

Review: FIFA 14 (PS3)

Say what you want about EA, it makes great games. There’s just no other way to put it. NHL 14 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 both excelled over previous entries, but now that FIFA 14 has run onto the field, all of those fingers that got pointed at EA for being the worst company in the world earlier this year (and the year before), well, if you’re one of the finger pointers, you can point that finger right back at yourself, because you're pretty silly.

Review: Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut (Vita)

Review by Sam M.

I'm often intrigued by games that try to offer more than just an enjoyable experience. When something comes along that has solid gameplay, but also brings with it a deep set of undertones, it makes the venture into the game much more worthwhile.

Review: Tiny Death (iPhone)

Review by Chris I.

When you jump into one of Game Atelier’s games, you rest assured that you’ll find a gaming experience that’s delightful to the senses, with signature colourful visuals and upbeat tunes.

In its latest release, Tiny Death, the team have created an awesome leading character; a squashed down (and entirely too cute) version of the Grim Reaper. This beautiful 2D platforming title oozes the team’s unique style, and yet the adoption of a Free-to-Play purchase model puts a few unwanted skeletons in its closet along the way.

Review: Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs (PC)

Review by V8Ninja.

Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs was not developed by Frictional Games. Rather, the game was developed by The Chinese Room. The Chinese Room's resume only features one video game, which was Dear Esther.

While I cannot judge any of the claims, many individuals criticised Dear Esther for taking away all meaningful player interaction and replacing it with story and meticulously crafted environments, with many coming to the conclusion that Dear Esther was primarily a set of pretty dioramas rather than a video game (we rather loved it at Digitally Downloaded though). When many heard the news that The Chinese Room was developing A Machine For Pigs, they thought that The Chinese Room's freshman debut was not indicative of the developers future and that the developer would lend their knack for environmental detail to Frictional Games' top-notch horror gameplay.

The critics of Dear Esther are going to have a field day over Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs.

Review: Irritum (PC)

Sometimes one, single, interesting mechanic can be the reason to play a game. Without its bullet-absorption mechanic, Ikaruga is another unremarkable Japanese 2D shooter. Without its dimension-flipping mechanic, Fez is a pretty but mostly unremarkable 2D puzzle-platformer. Without puck manipulation, Scatter is a breakout clone that is successful at cloning frustration.

Review: NHL 14 (PS3)

EA draws a lot of criticism for its core sports franchises primarily featuring minor tweaks and improvements, along with rosters updates each year, and to some degree it’s understandable. As you can see in our review, this year’s Madden title tackled itself right into this category. Yet, earlier this year EA Tiburon teed up with a host of improvements and modes in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14: The Masters Historic Edition and now EA Canada has hit the ice in full force in NHL 14, delivering a virtual hockey experience that is the closest thing you’ll find to stepping into the rink for yourself.
