Review: Soulcalibur 2 HD Online (PS3)

Review by Matt S.

Of the many HD remakes we've seen this generation this one I don't quite get, though I'm certainly not complaining of its existence. While Soulcalibur 2 is arguably the finest game in the franchise, it's impossible to argue that the current generation's Soulcalibur 5 is a lesser game; it has more characters, more gameplay options, and more a more complex art direction.

Soulcalibur 2 in HD looks great thanks to its timeless art direction, but like most HD remakes there's small details that are missing here - environments look and feel more basic, for instance, and character models might be HD, but they are low on the detail that would mark them out as next gen character designs. They look like mannequin models, in other words. Other than the online combat there isn't anything that has been added to the package either. By modern fighting game standards it's quite the minimalist package.

Review: Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures (PS3)

Review by Nick H.

Boy Pac-Man has changed a lot over the last 33 years. I still remember the arcade cabinets that released when I was just a little kid back in 1980 (I feel like I just dated myself a bit there). But as with all things, a touch up was needed to keep Pac-Man alive in the modern era. A new animated show featuring the globular one came out this summer, and this game is based on that series.

J-Stars Victory Vs. - Screens and special edition info

J-Stars Victory Vs. is bringing together a lot of popular anime characters and cramming them into a single fighting game. Crossovers are nothing new - in fact we have been seeing a lot of them lately from different companies (such as the Street Fighter and Tekken crossover or the huge cast of characters brought together for Project X Zone), so it really only makes sense that Namco Bandai would create something including some of their biggest gaming properties such as Dragon Ball Z and Naruto.

Screens of Dragon Ball Z's customisation options

There have been a lot of action and cinematic screenshots released by Namco Bandai for its upcoming Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z title for the Xbox 360, PS4 and Vita. This is the first really good look I have seen of the character customisation screens however.

Review: Armored Core: Verdict Day (PS3)

Before Verdict Day, I had never played an Armored Core game. So picture, if you will, someone whose first experience of a game is a bunch of prompts to import a character from Armored Core 5, then set up a character because I selected 'no.'

Then I had to wade through all kinds of news from the Armored Core 5 world (all of which assumed some kind of knowledge of the previous game and failed to make much sense to me), and I needed to explore each and every menu to try and figure out what each meant because there were no tutorials of any kind to explain what is going on. I customised my mech without really knowing what I was doing to it, and then, being unwilling to get into the multiplayer for fear of my last 20 minutes of customisation embarrassing me, I went to what seemed like the least important part of the menu - the single player game, to play my first mission.

Dark and gloomy can look pretty too

Dark Souls and its predecessor Demon's Souls were dark, grim affairs that led to many, many player deaths. Dark Souls II promises to offer up more of the same, and the visuals continue to impress with every new batch of screenshots that get released.

Soulcalibur going free-to-play

So, you remember when I argued that the fighting game genre was one ripe for the freemium model? That being able to buy individual characters could work much like people are happy to buy individual characters in a game like League of Legends and in fact this was good for the fans because it encourages developers to continue to expand on the game release by releasing new characters without creating yet another full-priced game?

Review: One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 (PS3)

When it comes to the licensed Warriors games, how much you enjoy them depends entirely on how much you like the source material. If you're a fan of Fist of the North Star, you're going to enjoy those games more than someone who isn't. This is true of One Piece as well.

Prepare to lose your Soul - again

Of course, the real test will come when it is time to play the game. Here everything is visually detailed and interesting, but some of the screenshots certainly help convey the sense of menace and often times oppressive atmosphere.

Dark Souls II closed Beta looks to start taking PS3 applicants early next month

Namco Bandai Games recently revealed that it will be rolling out new streams of information daily on the Dark Souls II Facebook page, starting September 5th. This closed-beta will allow players to step into one of the most treacherous areas of the game and are stating that only the hardcore players need to apply, by calling it “one of the most challenging beta experiences ever offered on the Sony PlayStation 3 system.”

Review: Tales of Xillia (PS3)

The Tales series has a long history; 14 main games and a handful of side quests. Through that time there has been a remarkably consistent approach to game design and though there's been general improvements and tweaks to the spreadsheets operating the game, for the player, there's a familiarity about the Tales games that is greater than what you'll find in most other JRPGs.

That's what the fans of this series seem to want, but that aside, Xillia proves one thing quite conclusively - the Tales series needs a rethink. It's just not advancing as quickly as its immediate rivals.
