Nintendo and Tecmo Koei are collaborating on a Zelda Warriors game!

As everyone who knows me knows I have a slight obsession with Tecmo Koei's Warriors franchise, and I love how the developers over there keep turning the formula to a range of different Anime/ Manga and JRPG franchises.

A Zelda Warriors (tentatively titled "Hyrule Warriors") game on the Wii U is perhaps the strangest release yet in the franchise, but absolutely, completely welcome.

Announced on tonight's Nintendo Direct, all we got to see was a brief bit of action, but it was enough to sell me on the idea. It's going to be exciting to follow this one in the future, because the Warriors franchise is most famous for a range of features we don't see in Zelda games - dozens of playable characters for a start.

However it turns out this will be a big boost for the Wii U in Japan, where the Warriors games are typically chart toppers, and for obvious reasons this will be an exclusive to the Wii U.

If you've never played a Warriors game before, why not go grab Dynasty Warriors 8 and get a feel for just how entertaining this franchise can be?

Review: Mega Man (Wii U)

Review by Clark A.

Mega Man’s first outing is surprisingly overlooked for a mascot-spawning title. Its relevance may be called into question given the widespread opinion that its sequels all offer finer experiences, but the blue bomber’s lightened release schedule these days and his inclusion in the upcoming Smash Bros. may well end up drawing a few extra curious eyes to his debut.

Review: Deus Ex: Human Revolution The Director's Cut (Wii U)

Review by Matt S.

Straight Right deserves recognition for being the best developer in the industry when it comes to porting games to the Wii U. Its port of Mass Effect 3 was a tragic tale; despite producing the finest version of one of the finest games of the generation (by some margin, in fact) to launch the Wii U in style, too many people chose to instead focus on the fact that EA released an easy compilation of all three Mass Effect games for the other two consoles.

That compilation had no extra work done to it, but in this industry 'fans' like to see the world with the glass half empty, it seems. So it pains me to say this, but I think Straight Right is headed right towards tragedy number two with its Wii U remake of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Without a doubt Human Revolution on the Wii U is the ultimate version of the game, and it's also one of the finest uses of the Gamepad and MiiVerse that we've seen to date (including from Nintendo itself). But I'm sure there will be plenty of people out there that criticise its price or how old the game is compared to the other AAA-games out there or something.

So much for putting all that extra effort in, right?

Video review: Sonic Lost World (Wii U)

The entire Sonic series has always been a bit beyond me. It's not that I have a problem with the idea of a super-speedy platformer, but something about Sonic has always left me cold. Perhaps it's just that I prefer to explore a game's environment, and Sonic by nature excludes exploration in favour of insane speed runs and twitch skills.

Trailer: Unepic for Wii U looks pretty awesome

As a big fan of D & D, faithful attempts to parody the experience have always appealed to me. After all, the whole concept of suiting up awesome armour and descending into the inky black of a dungeon to slay orcs, trolls, and dragons is timeless, but it's also quite silly.

Doing a new DK Rap; hands on with Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Preview by Sam M.

Arguably one of the best titles on the Wii was Donkey Kong Country Returns, which emerged on the console in 2010, and was then rereleased on the Nintendo 3DS. Now, developer Retro Studios looks to make its debut on the Wii U with the sequel, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

Nintendo has done a Wii U update. The new features are good.

Pre-empting a new Nintendo Direct tonight, Nintendo has rolled out an update for its Wii U console. This is a major update that offers some great new features. Nothing console-selling, but good additions for existing customers.

A peek at Toon Link in Super Smash Bros.

Toon Link is getting a lot of love lately, first with the Wind Waker HD remake for the Wii U, and now he is showing up in some screenshots of the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game.

Review: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (Wii U)

Since its unveiling at Nintendo Direct in January, I couldn’t help but feel a remake of Nintendo’s Game Cube classic, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, was a bit pointless. Numerous other titles could have used the high-definition treatment and Wind Waker’s original release presentation holds up better than most games of its era.

Review: The Wonderful 101 (Wii U)

Platinum Games' titles are nothing if not divisive. The Wonderful 101 is no different. In fact, with this specific game my Twitter feed contains comments ranging from "game of the year," right through to "what the heck is this thing?"

Division over the quality of a game isn't anything new to the games industry but the range of opinions for this specific game seems to hold no middle ground whatsoever. People either love it, or hate it.

So I'm in a pretty lonely group, because I fall into the middle ground. The game's concept and style are fun to experience, but as a game to play it's limited and physically uncomfortable and is more of an argument against a dual screen experience on the Wii U than an argument for it.

Playing with prices: Nintendo announces 2DS, Wii U price cut, Wind Waker HD bundle

Today has been an active day in the Nintendo household. Not only was a price cut announced, but a new system bundle was confirmed and a brand new variation of the 3DS was unveiled.

Review: Disney Infinity (Wii U)

When it came time to head down to the local game store and pick up my copy of Disney Infinity, the only platform that made sense to me was the Nintendo Wii U. Not because the Gamepad is used in any special way (it isn't), but for the same reason that the same magic that made Disney such a special company when Walt was in charge is the magic that makes Nintendo games so compelling.

Review: Pokémon Rumble U (Wii U)

Back when the 3DS didn't have much software to speak of, I found myself hopelessly addicted to Pokémon Rumble Blast. It was addictive in short bursts and offered a nice little level structure that had me wanting to replay levels over and over again to catch all the critters.

Pokémon Rumble U is not Pokémon Rumble Blast. In a massive backstep from the strides the 3DS game took for this sub-franchise, Pokémon Rumble U is little more than the Wii Pokémon Rumble game.

Review: DuckTales Remastered (Wii U)

Wayforward has an interesting track record. When the developer is working on a passion project, it is unbelievably good. When the team cares about the material they drip their hearts and souls into creating gorgeous, personality-filled animation and characters, and classic 2D level design.

The other half of Wayforward's business model is licensed titles and while in fairness Wayforward's licensed titles are better than the efforts of many others, the less said about these games the better.

So it's just as well that DuckTales is a game Wayforward cared about. Amongst all the platformers I've played in my life, it's difficult to think of a game that has more character and personality than this one.

Small and independent publishers see good business in the Nintendo Wii U

Phil Gaskell
To hear the small and independent publishers talk about the Wii U, it does not matter that the console has only managed to shift a couple hundred thousand units in the last quarter; it’s still a big opportunity.

In fact, it works to their benefit that the likes of EA and Ubisoft are scaling back their interest in the platform.

Review: Earthbound (Wii U)

I had never had the opportunity to play Earthbound before. That's not from lack of desire to experience it, but being Australian means that I miss out on all kinds of classic RPGs (and a bunch of modern ones as well) that people rave about. However, Earthbound was an especially gaping hole in my collection because, to hear certain circles speak of it is is the greatest JRPG ever made. Such is the reputation of the game that it commands some truly magical prices over at Ebay, not unlike a Game Boy Color game we reviewed last week; Shantae.

Earthbound on the Wii U Virtual Console goes for $13 here in Australia, and now having played through it, I'm glad I only paid $13 for it. While it is undoubtedly a lot of fun I do fail to see how anyone could put this game in the same league of some of the classic JRPGs out there.
