Dhoom 3 breaks all past records at box-office

The Rs.36-crore figure for Aamir's latest film, released in a non-festive weekend, has bested the first-day collection of Shah Rukh Khan's Chennai Express, which earned Rs.33.1 crore when it released on Eid. The opening day collection of SRK's film had in turn broken the record of Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger (Rs.32.9
crore), released on Eid 2012.

Chennai Express also went on to become the biggest Bollywood hit ever raking in Rs.420 crore at the global box-office. Incidentally that record was held by Aamir's 2009 release 3 Idiots, which saw a worldwide earning of Rs.393 crore.

The trade now estimates Aamir is likely to wrest back that record. Dhoom 3 could well scale a Rs.500-crore mark, released across around 4,000 screens and with no major releases lined up over the next four weeks.

Dhoom 3 co-starring Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra is reportedly Bollywood's costliest production ever at Rs.150 crore. The challenge now is to be the fastest film to hit the Rs.100-crore mark. The industry estimates Dhoom 3 could cross that mark in the first weekend itself.

While most recent biggies such as Chennai Express, Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ram-leela, Krrish 3 and Boss have stuck to all-out publicity blitzkrieg before release, flooding television, radio and the Internet with promotional activity, YRF honcho Aditya Chopra preferred to be low-key with the marketing of Dhoom 3.

In the vernacular market, Dhoom 3 is doing better in its Telugu version than in Tamil. A reason for that could be the release of Biriyani, a Tamil biggie, on the same day.
